PRELUDES Op. 81
by Stephen Heller
Eric Rockwell, pianist
STEPHEN HELLER (1813-1888) was a Hungarian pianist and composer. While living in Paris, he became acquainted with Chopin and Liszt, and was considered to be an artist of great distinction. However, he outlived his reputation, and by the end of his life, he and his work had largely been forgotten. Many of the compositions still played today are ones he composed for students. However, he also composed mature works which require virtuosity and sensitivity, His twenty-four Preludes Opus 81 explore the full range of romantic pianism.
